1. Salagou Lake Nautical Base
Salagou Lake, located less than an hour from Montpellier, offers a setting that coastal ponds do not replicate. The shores of volcanic red earth, the absence of current, and moderate depth make it an ideal water body for family pedal boating. The wind blows regularly here, which is appreciated by windsurfers, but the configuration of the sheltered coves allows for pedaling in safety.
The base generally offers pedal boats, canoes, paddleboards, and kayaks. The summer hours cover the entire afternoon, often from 2 PM to 7 PM. Parking is free at several access points to the lake, which limits additional costs.
The only constraint: Salagou is a classified Grand Site of France in the making. Swimming and navigation are regulated by defined zones. Check the authorized perimeters before settling in.
2. Carnon Nautical Base
Carnon-Plage, about fifteen minutes from the center of Montpellier via the coastal road, combines proximity and a seaside atmosphere. The nautical base rents pedal boats directly on the waterfront, with immediate access to the Mediterranean for models equipped with slides.
The main advantage of Carnon is its proximity: it is the quickest base to access from Montpellier without taking the highway. Families with young children appreciate the shallow depth near the shore and the supervision of the adjacent swimming area.
The downside: in the height of summer, the influx from the Montpellier coastline makes parking difficult. Prefer the tram (line 3 to Pérols, then shuttle) or leave in the early afternoon to avoid congestion.
3. La Grande-Motte Nautical Base
La Grande-Motte has several providers of water activities spread along its beaches. The seaside resort has invested in diversifying its leisure offerings, resulting in a catalog that is broader than average: classic pedal boats, pedal boats with slides, paddleboarding, sailing, and even boat excursions.
For pedal boating, the interest of La Grande-Motte lies in the regularity of navigation conditions. The dikes protect part of the coastline, reducing chop and making outings more comfortable, especially with children. The bases open early in the season (often as early as June) and offer extended time slots until September.

The downside remains the same as in Carnon: summer attendance. Palavas is the most visited resort on the Montpellier coastline. The wait at the nautical bases can exceed half an hour on weekends in July and August.
5. Laroque Nautical Base (Hérault Gorges)
The Laroque nautical base, located on the banks of the Hérault in the gorges, completely changes the setting. We leave the coastline for a river environment, about forty-five minutes from Montpellier. Pedal boating coexists with canoeing and kayaking, which are the flagship activities of the Hérault gorges between Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and Aniane.
Freshwater and moderate current offer a different experience from sea navigation. The cooler water temperature and the shade of the cliffs make outings pleasant even during the hottest hours. The Laroque base accepts several payment methods and offers rates adapted for groups.
